JSMC Graduates - A PhD Journey
Text by by Jakob Sprague
I did my PhD in the group of Prof. Bernhard Hube as part of the Department of Microbial Pathogenicity Mechanisms at the Leibniz-HKI. I’m still scheduling the date for my defense, but hopefully before the end of the year. My PhD has been a truly rewarding journey, despite the challenges and many frustrations. It’s given me a lot of valuable experience scientifically, professionally, and personally. I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone, but I do think it’s worth it in the end.
I’m not sure of what I will do next. I am happy that Prof. Hube has given me the opportunity to continue as a scientific researcher in the MPM Department and work supervising other PhD students for now. The JSMC was great to have as a support during my PhD. Providing extra funds to attend conferences and courses on different topics relevant for not only my doctoral studies, but also what comes next. Unfortunately, most of my PhD was done during COVID which limited the opportunities to participate in organizations like the JSMC. I am happy to see the revival of old projects like this newsletter and the enthusiasm of many newer members in getting involved in the JSMC now.
